[Tyra Talk] 2024-05-04 合成生物學在病媒蚊控制中的進展與挑戰


你知道嗎,學者粗估蚊子是歷史上50%人類死亡的元凶,使蚊子成為世界上最致命的生物!直至現今,每年仍約有一百萬人喪生於登革熱、茲卡病毒、西尼羅河病毒和瘧疾等蚊媒疾病。傳統的滅蚊方式(如殺蟲劑)雖然有效,但卻會衍生出抗藥性和環境破壞等問題。5月4號的TYRA演講,翁仕哲博士將介紹全新滅蚊技術:如何藉由合成生物學來增強蚊子對病原體的抵抗力及根除蚊子成為媒介等方式,有效控制蚊媒疾病的傳播。

翁仕哲 (Shih-Che Weng)
Shih-Che is a dedicated scientist with a diverse academic background. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences from National Dong Hwa University in Taiwan, followed by a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Microbiology from National Taiwan University. His doctoral research focused on molecular signaling mechanisms in mosquito reproduction control and interactions between mosquitoes and arboviruses. Transitioning to postdoctoral research, he joined Prof. Omar Akbari's laboratory, where he specializes in developing genetic tools to investigate sex-determining systems and vector control in mosquitoes. Shih-Che's passion lies in unraveling the complexities of vector-borne diseases and advancing strategies for their control.

|| 摘要(Abstract):

In a global context, mosquitoes hold the distinction of being the world's deadliest organisms, contributing to an estimated fifty percent of all historical human mortalities. Currently, mosquito-borne diseases are a major international health concern, causing the tragic loss of approximately one million lives annually. Diseases like dengue, Zika, West Nile, and malaria are spreading globally due to factors that increase mosquito populations and pathogen transmission. To address these devastating diseases, innovative control measures are imperative. Conventional approaches such as removing breeding sites and employing insecticides have been advantageous but encounter challenges such as insecticide resistance and environmental damage. In this presentation, I will present several innovative approaches that leverage synthetic biology to enhance mosquitoes' resistance to pathogens or eradicate mosquito vectors as a means of control.
