侯宗佑 (Yoyo Tsung-Yu Hou), PhD Candidate, Cornell University
Yoyo Tsung-Yu Hou is currently a PhD candidate in Information Science at Cornell University, specializing in Human-Robot Interaction and Human-AI Interaction under the guidance of Professor Malte Jung. His research focuses on exploring the influence of social structure factors, particularly social power, on our interaction with technologies within work settings. Yoyo holds a master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction with Ergonomics from University College London, where he received mentorship from Professor Yvonne Rogers. He earned dual bachelor's degrees, one in Psychology from National Taiwan University and another in Product Design from Shih-Chien University. In addition, Yoyo has gained valuable industry experience as a user experience designer in Asus Design Center for Asus' home robot Zenbo, and as a user experience researcher at Meta's Silicon Valley headquarters. With a strong academic background and industry experience, Yoyo is committed to advancing the field of Human-Computer Interaction and looks forward to sharing his research insights during this talk.
|| Abstract:
Social power, often described as the ability to influence others or control valuable resources, is a fundamental concept in interpersonal social interaction. It is so crucial that Bertrand Russell once stated that "the fundamental concept in social science is Power in the same sense in which Energy is the fundamental concept in physics." However, despite the increasing use of artificial agents, such as AI agents and robots, there is a scarcity of research that directly explores how power operates in human-agent interaction and how it differs from human-human interaction. This concern becomes even more urgent with the growing popularity of AI agents like ChatGPT, raising questions about potential issues such as AI or robot takeover.In this talk, I will start by introducing how power has been defined conceptually and operationally in human-human interaction within the field of social psychology. I will then delve into the challenges of applying these definitions in the context of human-agent interaction, which partly explains why power has received less attention in this area. Subsequently, I will provide an overview of existing studies in the domains of Human-AI Interaction and Human-Robot Interaction. Firstly, I will briefly discuss research that directly focuses on power or power-related concepts. Following that, I will demonstrate how social power is implicitly present in numerous studies within this field, highlighting the importance of acknowledging its existence. Additionally, I will present two of my own studies, and conclude the talk by outlining my future research trajectory.

Frank, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, investigates sub-lethal signaling's impact on cancer progression and tumor immunity. His journey epitomizes interdisciplinary adaptability and transcends geographical and academic boundaries. Originally hailing from Taiwan, Frank embarked on his academic journey in chemical engineering before redirecting his focus to molecular biology for his first master's degree. He subsequently earned a second master's in biomedical engineering from Cornell University and completed his Ph.D. at Technische Universität Dresden, specializing in cancer research spanning oncology, tumor immunology, and mechanobiology. Committed to both scientific advancement and mentorship, Frank held numerous leadership roles and organized over 50 events from 2020 to 2022, connecting Taiwanese talent worldwide and guiding others in their career and personal brand development. Frank eagerly anticipates his forthcoming contributions through Project Tyra, where he continues to inspire and empower fellow researchers.
